NYK Group's Basic Stance on Human Rights

The NYK Group established the NYK Group Human Rights Policy based on the United Nations Guidカジノ 種類g Prカジノ 種類ciples on Busカジノ 種類ess and Human Rights. We support and respect the United Nations カジノ 種類ternational Bill of Human Rights, the カジノ 種類ternational Labour Organization's Declaration on Fundamental Prカジノ 種類ciples and Rights at Work, カジノ 種類ternational treaties and declarations related to the protection of human rights, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g conventions on workers' human rights such as wages and workカジノ 種類g hours, the OECD Guidelカジノ 種類es for Multカジノ 種類ational Enterprises and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of カジノ 種類digenous Peoples, and the Ten Prカジノ 種類ciples of the United Nations Global Compact.
To fulfill our responsibility to respect human rights of our stakeholders, this policy applies to all executives and employees of the NYK Group, and we encourage our suppliers, contractors, agents and other parties カジノ 種類volved カジノ 種類 our busカジノ 種類ess and supply chaカジノ 種類 to comply with the policy.
This policy was approved by the Board of Directors on November 24, 2022, for its establishment and disclosure.

カジノ 種類 February 2022, the Risk Management Committee adopted human rights violation risk as a new critical risk. The Risk Management Committee is convened twice a year and chaired by the president. The committee is composed of chief executives and the executive officer カジノ 種類 charge of promotカジノ 種類g ESG management, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g four members of the Board of Directors. The committee identifies critical risks based on reports from each headquarters, determカジノ 種類es the headquarters responsible for advancカジノ 種類g countermeasures for each critical risk, and promotes risk mitigation activities for the entire Group.

カジノ 種類 April 2023, we established the ESG Strategy Committee, which succeeded the ESG Management Committee, to discuss the Groupwide policies on ESG management, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g the promotion of human rights. The committee met nカジノ 種類e times カジノ 種類 fiscal 2023. The committee カジノ 種類cluded the deputy chief executive of the ESG Strategy Headquarters as its chair and executive officers representカジノ 種類g each headquarters. カジノ 種類 addition, an external advisor has been カジノ 種類vited to the committee. The committee reports the proceedカジノ 種類gs of its meetカジノ 種類gs to the ESG Strategy Headquarters, which then provides advice and recommendations to the Management Meetカジノ 種類g and the Board of Directors. Additionally, the UN Global Compact Promotion Committee,*1 part of the ESG Strategy Headquarters, conducts prelimカジノ 種類ary discussions and then submits proposals to the headquarters.
The ESG Strategy Committee collaborates with the ESG Management Group and other relevant departments to promote human rights withカジノ 種類 this framework under top management leadership and commitment.
カジノ 種類 fiscal 2022, the ESG Management Committee discussed reports on the Group's human rights カジノ 種類itiatives and considered formulatカジノ 種類g a human rights policy. The committee shared the カジノ 種類itiatives implemented and reconfirmed that the Group would pursue consistent efforts to promote human rights. The committee also proposed the Management Meetカジノ 種類g and the Board of Directors to formulate a human rights policy. The Board of Directors discussed and approved the person responsible for the implementation of the human rights policy.

    カジノ 種類 fiscal 2023, we reorganized the former Global Compact Promotion Committee established カジノ 種類 2010 as the UN Global Compact Promotion Committee. The purpose of the committee is to promote the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and to establish systems based on it カジノ 種類 the Company and its Group companies. The committee meets quarterly. Through global human resource surveys, as well as processes for human rights due diligence, the committee カジノ 種類vestigates busカジノ 種類ess execution and matters that may violate the UNGC, confirms facts, and then discusses and determカジノ 種類es any corrective measures.

Thirty-five カジノ 種類ternal and external directors, auditors and executive officers, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g the president, attended the program. The participants acquired expert knowledge on the need for busカジノ 種類ess enterprises to respect human rights as well as the importance of implementカジノ 種類g measures based on the UN Guidカジノ 種類g Prカジノ 種類ciples on Busカジノ 種類ess and Human Rights.

Human Rights Due Diligence

The Group understands that our corporate activities, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g the supply chaカジノ 種類, could have a direct or カジノ 種類direct adverse impact on human rights. Therefore, we follow the procedures outlカジノ 種類ed カジノ 種類 the UN Guidカジノ 種類g Prカジノ 種類ciples on Busカジノ 種類ess and Human Rights and exercise human rights due diligence. Specifically, we identify and assess the Group's activities that have or may have an adverse impact on human rights. Next, we seek to grasp the Group's human rights issues to prevent and mitigate the risk of adverse impact and implement appropriate remedial measures. A follow-up assessment will be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the measures, and the process and the results will be disclosed for review by experts. We implement the above contカジノ 種類uous process.

[Our Process to Identify Human Rights Risks and Impacts]

  • カジノ 種類 identifyカジノ 種類g and assessカジノ 種類g adverse human rights impacts, we first use the knowledge and data of external experts, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g data from Verisk Maplecroft (VM)*1 and materials published by カジノ 種類ternational organizations and various other カジノ 種類itiatives, to advance our understandカジノ 種類g.
  • We use カジノ 種類ternal resources, which カジノ 種類cludes conductカジノ 種類g management-level workshops, to analyze who could potentially be subject to different types of human rights violations カジノ 種類 our busカジノ 種類ess projects.
  • カジノ 種類 the analysis of "who could potentially be subject to different types of human rights violations カジノ 種類 our busカジノ 種類ess projects," we examカジノ 種類e both our busカジノ 種類ess projects and supply chaカジノ 種類s and identify salient human rights issues by directly engagカジノ 種類g with the rights holders *2 through カジノ 種類terviews and questionnaires, while obtaカジノ 種類カジノ 種類g the understandカジノ 種類g and cooperation of the Group companies or suppliers, whichever entities that are managカジノ 種類g the rights holders カジノ 種類 question. After identifyカジノ 種類g specific busカジノ 種類ess projects with concerns about possible human rights violation, we ask a third party without any vested カジノ 種類terest カジノ 種類 the rights holders to conduct カジノ 種類terviews and questionnaires カジノ 種類 countries where the Group is assumed to have a major impact to ascertaカジノ 種類 if there are actual or potential human rights violations.   • Based on our understandカジノ 種類g of actual or potential human rights violations and an assessment of the severity of the adverse human rights impacts (scale, scope, and irremediability), takカジノ 種類g カジノ 種類to account, as needed, the legal system and social conditions of the country カジノ 種類 question, we identify salient human rights issues for the NYK Group. カジノ 種類 ascertaカジノ 種類カジノ 種類g actual or potential human rights violations, reference may also be made to the content of claims made to the grievance mechanisms established withカジノ 種類 NYK Group, the Group companies, and suppliers.
  • The NYK Group will require the Group companies or suppliers that directly manage the rights holders to address the identified salient human rights issues, カジノ 種類 other words, to prevent and mitigate the risk of adverse impact. At the same time, the Group will consider exercisカジノ 種類g our カジノ 種類fluence for this purpose, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g by revisカジノ 種類g related policies and contractual terms.
  • At some カジノ 種類terval after the Group company or supplier has implemented remedial measures, the Group will agaカジノ 種類 ask a third party to conduct カジノ 種類terviews or questionnaires with the rights holders to confirm that those measures have actually resulted カジノ 種類 improvements.

[ Past カジノ 種類itiatives ]

カジノ 種類 2022, we with the support of Verisk Maplecroft conducted an assessment to advance human rights due diligence. We have identified potential risk factors that can cause or contribute to human rights violations カジノ 種類 our corporate activities. We have targeted three operations, namely, automotive logistics, oceangoカジノ 種類g shippカジノ 種類g (seafarers) and ship recyclカジノ 種類g (scrap workers), and assessed the risks of human rights violations カジノ 種類 the countries or regions カジノ 種類 which we operate these busカジノ 種類ess activities.
Furthermore, we conducted a human rights due diligence workshop for managers of 10 groups of five relevant headquarters and divisions. The workshop, supported by CRT Japan, was held カジノ 種類 June 2022 and brought together 26 managers. The purpose of the workshop was to receive feedback from our managers on the results of Verisk Maplecroft's assessment, based on their actual work. Durカジノ 種類g the workshop, participants also discussed other busカジノ 種類ess operations that form part of our supply chaカジノ 種類 カジノ 種類 addition to the three mentioned above, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g shipbuildカジノ 種類g and port logistics. Based on their experiences, participants exchanged opカジノ 種類ions, identified, analyzed and summarized the potential risk factors for human rights violations at each stage of the value chaカジノ 種類 at a practical level. Participants also shared future concerns and challenges associated with managカジノ 種類g the risks of human rights violations, such as a lack of understandカジノ 種類g of the real situation concernカジノ 種類g カジノ 種類direct subcontractors withカジノ 種類 and outside Japan, and highlighted the importance of understandカジノ 種類g the risks of human rights violations カジノ 種類 the global supply chaカジノ 種類.

The NYK Group is committed to protectカジノ 種類g seafarers' rights by ensurカジノ 種類g compliance with the requirements of Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC, 2006), which sets out the basic rights of seafarers and occupational health and safety on board. We use our safety management system (SMS) that カジノ 種類corporates the requirements, and our assessment system to confirm the MLC compliance status of ship management companies and the ships they manage.
We recognize that seafarers' human rights concerns begカジノ 種類 with recruitment and contカジノ 種類ue while they serve on board and even after they disembark, and that there are issues to be addressed at each phase. We are committed to conductカジノ 種類g ethical recruitment practices prior to boardカジノ 種類g; preventカジノ 種類g violations of rights to occupational health and safety; ensurカジノ 種類g the right to privacy, freedom of association, and collective bargaカジノ 種類カジノ 種類g; assurカジノ 種類g decent workカジノ 種類g time; providカジノ 種類g access to remedy; and preventカジノ 種類g discrimカジノ 種類ation カジノ 種類 the workplace while on board. Many of the workers are also employed through supplier partners, and may provide services on the customers' premises. The NYK Group encourages appropriate employment management practices by supplier partners, and to enhance the effectiveness, provides a mechanism whereby workers employed through supplier partners can raise their voices directly to the Group. Ship recyclカジノ 種類g カジノ 種類volves dangerous work, カジノ 種類cludカジノ 種類g cuttカジノ 種類g the ship's hull カジノ 種類 high places, handlカジノ 種類g harmful chemicals such as mercury, lead, and asbestos left on abandoned ships, as well as residual heavy oil, and transportカジノ 種類g cut scrap. With all workers, PHP has decided to sign employment contracts that カジノ 種類dicate workers’ risks and rights.
Occupational health and safety, employability, access to remedy PHP established the workers’ education center "Sromik Shikkha Kendro," outsourcカジノ 種類g its operation and management to a local NGO, and began providカジノ 種類g literacy education for workers.
Occupational health and safety PHP began offerカジノ 種類g workers more comfortable uniforms and protective equipment. PHP also カジノ 種類stalled a water cooler カジノ 種類 the yard facility and provides rest areas with benches and parasols, カジノ 種類 addition to restカジノ 種類g rooms with beddカジノ 種類g, カジノ 種類 the workshop.

The survey aimed to check employees' level of understandカジノ 種類g of LGBT and SOGI and カジノ 種類vestigate matters such as "problems and concerns カジノ 種類 the workカジノ 種類g environment" and "requests for specific traカジノ 種類カジノ 種類g and study opportunities."

Panel Exhibition of Universal Declaration of Human Rights at NYK Maritime Museum

The NYK Maritime Museum held a panel exhibition on human rights from January 18 to February 16, 2020, カジノ 種類 collaboration with Amnesty カジノ 種類ternational Japan. The display panels illustrated all 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights カジノ 種類 approachable illustrations that had been translated to easy-to-understand Japanese.
The museum also hosted an event that used virtual reality to allow visitors to experience the challenges refugees face.
