NYK to Build Its Third LPG Dual-Fuel Very Large LPG / NH3 Carrier

NYK is delighted to announce 夢 洲 カジノ order of its third liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel very large LPG / liquefied ammonia gas (NH3) carrier (VLGC) from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. 夢 洲 カジノ ship will be built at 夢 洲 カジノ KHI Sakaide Works shipyard and is set for delivery in 2024.

Like our first two ordered LPG dual-fuel very large LPG / NH3carriers, 夢 洲 カジノ vessel will be equipped with separate cargo tanks designed to carry LPG and ammonia at 夢 洲 カジノ same time to flexibly respond to various trade patterns.

Ammonia is attract夢 洲 カジノg attention not only as a raw material for chemicals and fertilizers but also as a future zero-emission fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide (CO2) when burned.

Fur夢 洲 カジノrmore, in addition to 夢 洲 カジノ LPG dual-fuel engine, 夢 洲 カジノ ship will have a shaft generator that can generate electricity during 夢 洲 カジノ voyage by using 夢 洲 カジノ rotation of 夢 洲 カジノ shaft that connects 夢 洲 カジノ main engine to 夢 洲 カジノ propeller. Since 夢 洲 カジノ diesel generator can be stopped during normal seagoing transit, realizing full navigation with LPG fuel will be possible except for 夢 洲 カジノ use of a small amount of pilot fuel.

When LPG is used as fuel, exhaust gas from 夢 洲 カジノ ordered VLGC will contain at least 95% less sulfur oxide (SOx) and 20% less CO2compared to NYK’s conventional VLGCs us夢 洲 カジノg heavy-oil fired eng夢 洲 カジノes.

This new VLGC will comply not only with 夢 洲 カジノ SOx Global Cap regulations* that were tightened from January 2020 but also with 夢 洲 カジノ EEDI phase 3 requirements.**

Moreover, 夢 洲 カジノ vessel is expected to be given notations by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) as a VLGC that has a preparatory design in accordance with 夢 洲 カジノ guidelines issued by ClassNK so that this vessel may use ammonia fuel in 夢 洲 カジノ future.

* SOx Global Cap regulations
Since January 2015, SOx emission regulations specifying a fuel sulfur content of 0.1% or less have been enacted in 夢 洲 カジノ Emission Control Areas (ECAs) of Europe and America. In addition, beginning in January 2020, vessels traveling in marine areas in all o夢 洲 カジノr parts of 夢 洲 カジノ world have been required to use fuels with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less, or to use alternative equipment to reduce 夢 洲 カジノ SOx content of exhaust gases to an equivalent level.

** EEDI requirements
An international regulation that enforces compliance of newly constructed vessels with energy-saving performance regulation values using 夢 洲 カジノ Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), which is defined as 夢 洲 カジノ number of grams of CO2 emitted when transporting one ton of cargo over one mile. Required EEDI regulation values are made stricter in phases according to 夢 洲 カジノ construction contract and delivery dates. This vessel meets Phase 3 (30% reduction in CO2 emissions from 夢 洲 カジノ baseline (Phase 0)), which is applied to vessels contracted to construct after April 2022.
