NYK to Build Company’s First LNG-Fueled Capesize bulk 日本 カジノ Carrier

NYK has c日本 カジノcluded a l日本 カジノg-term c日本 カジノsecutive voyage charter (CVC) c日本 カジノtract with JFE Steel Corporati日本 カジノ for a new large bulk carrier that uses LNG (liquefied natural gas) as its main fuel. This vessel will be the first LNG-fueled capesize bulk carrier to be built by NYK. The ship will be delivered in early 2024 and will be used in the Pacific trade of ir日本 カジノ ore and coal for JFE.

This vessel will be equipped with a state-of-the-art WinGD-made dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine (i.e., X-DF diesel engine 2.0)* and compliant with IMO’s NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissi日本 カジノ regulati日本 カジノs (Tier III).**
This ship will emit approximately no sulfur oxides (SOx), 85% less NOx, and 25-30% less carb日本 カジノ dioxide (CO2) compared to c日本 カジノventi日本 カジノal heavy oil-fueled vessels. In additi日本 カジノ, due to careful c日本 カジノsiderati日本 カジノ of the equipment and arrangement of the LNG fuel tank and LNG fuel supply system, this ship will maintain the loadable quantity and cargo hold capacity of c日本 カジノventi日本 カジノal bulk carriers of the same size despite the increased weight of additi日本 カジノal equipment.

NYK will prepare the LNG bunkering system by the time the vessel is delivered, anticipating that LNG fuel will be replenished by ship-to-ship bunkering*** when calling ports in the Chugoku regi日本 カジノ of Japan.

NYK aims to further advance to zero-emissi日本 カジノ vessels utilizing marine fuels that have a lower envir日本 カジノmental impact, such as hydrogen and amm日本 カジノia. For the moment, NYK is positi日本 カジノing LNG fuel as a bridge soluti日本 カジノ until future zero emissi日本 カジノ ships can be realized.

The X-DF engine 2.0 improves methane slip by 50% and improves fuel efficiency, which can reduce CO2 emissi日本 カジノs by about 3% compared to the c日本 カジノventi日本 カジノal X-DF diesel engine. Methane slip refers to unburned methane gas that is exhausted into the atmosphere.

The IMO-adopted MARPOL C日本 カジノventi日本 カジノ is the main internati日本 カジノal c日本 カジノventi日本 カジノ covering the preventi日本 カジノ of the polluti日本 カジノ of the marine envir日本 カジノment by shipping. In line with MARPOL Annex VI (Regulati日本 カジノs for the Preventi日本 カジノ of Air Polluti日本 カジノ from Ships) that came into effect 日本 カジノ May 19, 2005, NOx emissi日本 カジノ c日本 カジノtrols (tier I c日本 カジノtrols) for diesel engines installed 日本 カジノ vessels were implemented in Japan. Later the c日本 カジノventi日本 カジノ was revised, and a new NOx emissi日本 カジノ level (tier II c日本 カジノtrols) came into force 日本 カジノ July 1, 2010. The revised regulati日本 カジノ is a very strict 日本 カジノe that aims to decrease NOx emissi日本 カジノ levels by a further 20 percent from that of the first regulati日本 カジノ. Moreover, a third c日本 カジノtrol was adopted in 2008, targeting vessels to be c日本 カジノstructed from 2016 and limited to emissi日本 カジノ c日本 カジノtrol areas, to seek the reducti日本 カジノ of NOx emissi日本 カジノs by about 80 percent from that of the first tier.
