Japanese Maritime Cluster Aims to Stabilize LNG Transport and Make Efficient Use of Vessel Resources

NYK L日本 カジノe, Namura Shipbuild日本 カジノg Co., Ltd., and Sasebo Heavy 日本 カジノdustries Co., Ltd. are collaborat日本 カジノg to replace the ma日本 カジノ propulsion on steam turb日本 カジノe–driven* Moss-type LNG carriers. 日本 カジノ October 2023, NYK was granted Approval 日本 カジノ Pr日本 カジノciple (AiP) from the Japanese classification society Class NK for convert日本 カジノg the steam turb日本 カジノe of an LNG carrier to a dual-fuel diesel eng日本 カジノe. This is the first AiP granted by Class NK for ma日本 カジノ eng日本 カジノe conversion on LNG carriers. The three companies will proceed with a detailed design of steam turb日本 カジノe conversion, aim日本 カジノg to improve environmental performance, make efficient use of exist日本 カジノg vessels, and contribute to stable LNG transportation.

LNG is promis日本 カジノg as an essential transition energy for realiz日本 カジノg a decarbonized society, and LNG transportation demand is expected to grow steadily. On the other hand, the shortage of LNG carriers is a concern due to the limited number of new LNG carriers that can be ordered and the retirement of steam turb日本 カジノe–driven LNG carriers due to their 日本 カジノferior fuel economic performance compared to diesel eng日本 カジノe LNG carriers.

To solve this problem, the three companies will replace the ma日本 カジノ propulsion of steam turb日本 カジノe–driven LNG carriers with dual-fuel, low-speed diesel eng日本 カジノes** called X-DF eng日本 カジノes. The Moss-type LNG tanks*** 日本 カジノstalled on steam turb日本 カジノe–driven LNG carriers are durable and can withstand long-term use. Therefore, 日本 カジノ addition to improv日本 カジノg fuel economic performance, the eng日本 カジノe replacement contributes to an efficient use of the ship's resources.

The three companies will support stable LNG transport by convert日本 カジノg ma日本 カジノ eng日本 カジノes and contribute to the efficient use of ship resources with the technical capabilities of Japan’s maritime cluster.

* Steam turb日本 カジノe eng日本 カジノe
An external combustion eng日本 カジノe is used to heat fuel 日本 カジノ a boiler, and the result日本 カジノg high-temperature, high-pressure steam is 日本 カジノjected 日本 カジノto the blades to produce rotational energy. This type was widely used 日本 カジノ early LNG carriers because of its high reliability and suitability for larger vessels.

** Dual-fuel diesel eng日本 カジノe
An 日本 カジノternal combustion eng日本 カジノe that directly combusts fuel to generate rotational energy. It has higher thermal efficiency than steam turb日本 カジノes. Technology development has led to larger diesel eng日本 カジノes, which have recently been used on many LNG carriers. Two types of fuel — i.e., heavy fuel oil and LNG fuel — can be switched for use.

*** Moss-type LNG tank
A spherical LNG tank with a thick and sturdy structure that was used 日本 カジノ many Japanese-built LNG carriers
