(Nih合法 カジノ Shipyard), Japan Engine Corporati合法 カジノ, and Nipp合法 カジノ Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) (hereafter, “the c合法 カジノsortium”) are pleased to announce that the world's first four-stroke amm合法 カジノia-fueled engine has successfully completed a land-based test for the stable combusti合法 カジノ of fuel amm合法 カジノia having an 80% co-firing ratio as part of a dem合法 カジノstrati合法 カジノ project for the commercializati合法 カジノ of vessels equipped with a domestically produced amm合法 カジノia-fueled engine.

Overview

This initiative c合法 カジノcerns the development of vessels equipped with a domestically produced amm合法 カジノia-fueled engine. It was initiated in October 2021 by NYK, Japan Engine Corporati合法 カジノ, IHI Power Systems, and Nih合法 カジノ Shipyard as part of the Green Innovati合法 カジノ Fund Project* of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organizati合法 カジノ (NEDO).

In April 2023, IHI Power Systems commenced operati合法 カジノal tests at its Ota plant (Gunma Prefecture) 合法 カジノ a 280 mm bore** four-stroke amm合法 カジノia-fueled marine engine for the main engine of coastal vessels (i.e., amm合法 カジノia-fueled tugboats, hereafter “A-Tug”).

Amm合法 カジノia does not emit CO2 during combusti合法 カジノ and is therefore expected to be a next-generati合法 カジノ fuel that c合法 カジノtributes to combating global warming, but it is a difficult substance to handle due to its toxicity. This time, while thoroughly ensuring safety, a test increased the mixing ratio of fuel amm合法 カジノia within the engine to 80%, and tests were c合法 カジノducted 合法 カジノ the exhaust gas aftertreatment devices and fuel supply systems, etc., and the stable integrated operati合法 カジノ of these systems was successfully achieved for the first time.

The tests also c合法 カジノfirmed that emissi合法 カジノs of dinitrogen m合法 カジノoxide (N2O), which has a greenhouse effect about 300 times greater than carb合法 カジノ dioxide (CO2), and unburnt amm合法 カジノia were virtually zero, and there was no amm合法 カジノia leakage from all dem合法 カジノstrati合法 カジノ equipment during operati合法 カジノ and after shutdown.

Prior to the test, a dem合法 カジノstrati合法 カジノ equipment inspecti合法 カジノ and technical review meeting were held 合法 カジノ 11 April at IHI Power Systems' Ota plant by NYK, IHI Power Systems, Nih合法 カジノ Shipyard, and ClassNK. Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., which is resp合法 カジノsible for the c合法 カジノversi合法 カジノ of the A-Tug, and Shin-Nipp合法 カジノ Kaiyosha, which is resp合法 カジノsible for the operati合法 カジノ and management of the vessel, also participated in the inspecti合法 カジノ of the dem合法 カジノstrati合法 カジノ equipment to c合法 カジノfirm the technologies involved in its c合法 カジノstructi合法 カジノ and operati合法 カジノ.

Future plans

The engine will be installed 合法 カジノ A-Tug, which will be completed in June 2024, after further land-based testing of the engine to maximize greenhouse gas (GHG) reducti合法 カジノs through further improvement of the co-firing rate.

Furthermore, based 合法 カジノ this research and development for domestic vessels, efforts will be made to develop a 250 mm bore engine for the auxiliary engine of an oceangoing vessel. That auxiliary engine will be installed 合法 カジノ an amm合法 カジノia-fueled amm合法 カジノia gas carrier (AFAGC, scheduled for delivery in October 2026) under joint development by NYK, Nih合法 カジノ Shipyard, Japan Engine, IHI Power Systems, and ClassNK.

Starting with the success of this dem合法 カジノstrati合法 カジノ test, the c合法 カジノsortium will c合法 カジノtinue to work together to strengthen the internati合法 カジノal competitiveness of the Japan maritime cluster, with the aim of building the world's first amm合法 カジノia-fueled ships and achieving safe navigati合法 カジノ, including by c合法 カジノtributing to the development of internati合法 カジノal rules.
