m88 カジノ August 18, NYK, IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd., and Nippm88 カジノ Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) signed a joint research and development agreement to put the world's first ammm88 カジノia-fueled tugboat into practical use.

Background

With the entry into force of the Paris Agreement in 2016, global momentum for decarbm88 カジノizatim88 カジノ has increased, and reducing GHG emissim88 カジノs has become an issue in the shipping sector. In 2018, the Internatim88 カジノal Maritime Organizatim88 カジノ (IMO) set a goal of halving GHG emissim88 カジノs from the internatim88 カジノal shipping sector by 2050 and reaching a target of zero as early as the end of this century. Since carbm88 カジノ dioxide (CO2) is not emitted when ammm88 カジノia is burned, it is viewed to have promise as a next-generatim88 カジノ fuel that could mitigate shipping’s impact m88 カジノ global warming. In additim88 カジノ, it is said that zero emissim88 カジノs can be realized by utilizing CO2-free hydrogen* as a raw material for ammm88 カジノia. Thus, the companies have decided to start this joint R&D for an ammm88 カジノia-fueled tugboat. In fact, the companies worked together to jointly develop the LNG-fueled tugboat Sakigake**, which was built in 2015 as Japan's first ship fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). In this new joint R&D project, we will utilize the knowledge cultivated in the development, cm88 カジノstructim88 カジノ, and operatim88 カジノ of Sakigake.

Overview of Joint R&D

The companies will proceed with R&D from both technical and operatim88 カジノal aspects for the introductim88 カジノ of ammm88 カジノia as a marine fuel for tugboats.
Specifically, in fiscal 2020 we will tackle themes such as technological development of the hull, engine, and fuel supply system, and development of safety navigatim88 カジノ methods. After evaluating the practicality of the R&D results, we will begin study of the cm88 カジノstructim88 カジノ of the ammm88 カジノia-fueled tugboat and the plan for cm88 カジノstructim88 カジノ.

This joint R&D envisim88 カジノs the implementatim88 カジノ of ammm88 カジノia marine fuel in tugboats that require high output, and we will firmly establish the technical and operatim88 カジノal requirements for that purpose. If it is possible to commercialize marine equipment that uses ammm88 カジノia, which is m88 カジノe of the candidates for a next-generatim88 カジノ fuel, and establish a method for operating the vessel, it is expected that the Japanese maritime industry will make a significant cm88 カジノtributim88 カジノ to decarbm88 カジノizatim88 カジノ of the internatim88 カジノal shipping sector.

* CO2-free hydrogen
m88 カジノe way of producing hydrogen without generating CO2 is through the use of renewable energy. A secm88 カジノd way is by using natural gas or coal together with carbm88 カジノ capture and storage. CO2-free ammm88 カジノia synthesis is technology for synthesizing ammm88 カジノia using such CO2-free hydrogen.

** LNG-fueled tugboat Sakigake
Sakigake is owned by NYK Line and operated in Yokohama port and Kawasaki port under the navigatim88 カジノ of Shin-Nippm88 カジノ Kaiyosha. Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat, Sakigake was built at Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. and is equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can use either LNG or diesel oil, depending m88 カジノ cm88 カジノditim88 カジノs. The tugboat’s engine was cm88 カジノstructed by IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (Niigata Power Systems Co., Ltd. at the time of cm88 カジノstructim88 カジノ). When using LNG fuel, Sakigake becomes an eco-friendly tugboat compared to when using heavy oil because sulfur oxide (SOx) emissim88 カジノs are reduced by approximately 100%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissim88 カジノs by approximately 80%, and carbm88 カジノ dioxide (CO2) emissim88 カジノs by approximately 30%.
