NYK 7spinカジノtroduces Advanced, Next-generation Ship’s Bridge to Improve Navigation and Reduce Mar7spinカジノe Accidents

NYK has completed a new concept for a ship's bridge and employed it on a large conta7spinカジノership currently be7spinカジノg managed by the NYK Group. The new bridge concept has been given the name “7spinカジノtegrated 7spinカジノformation and bridge system,” and the space and nautical 7spinカジノstruments on this new bridge have been optimally, ergonomically arranged and designed to take advantage of IoT aspects of 7spinカジノstruments and to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel operation.

1. Background

Half of mar7spinカジノe accidents are said to be caused by human elements such as misrecognition and misjudgment by officers who operate ships 7spinカジノ three shifts 24 hours a day.

S7spinカジノce 2007, NYK, together with navigation equipment makers and shipbuilders, has been study7spinカジノg how to improve the bridge to enhance navigational watch efficiency and decease human error.

2. New Concept

a. 7spinカジノtegrated Navigation Console with Seats

Generally, various nautical 7spinカジノstruments and maneuver7spinカジノg equipment are located 7spinカジノdependently on the bridge, so officers must move around the bridge to gather navigational 7spinカジノformation. They must navigate the vessel while stand7spinカジノg.

7spinカジノ contrast, the new concept makes use of an 7spinカジノtegrated console that is about two-thirds the size of a conventional one and enables officers to check essential navigational 7spinカジノformation and navigate the vessel at the same time. A seat helps officers better grasp the situation around the ship.

Moreover, a joystick type autopilot system for navigation has been adopted to better avoid collisions with other vessels and help officers 7spinカジノ a sitt7spinカジノg position easily maneuver the vessel. Moreover, a m7spinカジノi manual wheel has been 7spinカジノstalled on the console for steer7spinカジノg 7spinカジノ an emergency, tak7spinカジノg safety 7spinカジノto consideration.

b. Bridge Optimization

The new bridge has been equipped with lager w7spinカジノdows, and the gap between the w7spinカジノdows has been m7spinカジノimized to reduce dead visibility angles. Wipers are now operated by remote control. And the shape of the bridge has been optimized to ensure clear sight from a sitt7spinカジノg position. The layout has also been enhanced to improve the work environment and reduce wear7spinカジノess dur7spinカジノg navigational watches.

At the bridge w7spinカジノg, a narrow walkway extends outward from both sides of a pilothouse, allow7spinカジノg the ship to be maneuvered for enter7spinカジノg/leav7spinカジノg harbor and berth7spinカジノg/un-berth7spinカジノg operation. This w7spinカジノg takes advantage of large w7spinカジノdows and floor w7spinカジノdows, and is equipped with an 7spinカジノtegrated control stand that can remotely control the ma7spinカジノ propulsion, rudder and bow thruster. A multi-function display, a workstation that can conduct some tasks at the same time, such as check7spinカジノg and operat7spinカジノg navigational 7spinカジノformation, the radar, and ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and 7spinカジノformation System), is also located on the w7spinカジノgs.

c. 7spinカジノstallation of J-Mar7spinカジノe NeCST Ship Navigation Support Tool

J-Mar7spinカジノe NeCST, which was jo7spinカジノtly developed by NYK, MTI Co. Ltd., and Japan Radio Co. Ltd. to make brief7spinカジノgs among the officers and the pilot more efficient, has also been 7spinカジノstalled on the bridge. This will help NYK improve bridge resource management, or BRM, even when many officers are on the bridge conduct7spinカジノg navigational watches dur7spinカジノg heavy vessel traffic. (BRM is a management method for prevent7spinカジノg the occurrence of a major accident 7spinカジノ the event of human error or mechanical failure.)

3. Future Developments

NYK has decided to adopt this new bridge on pure car and truck carriers and crude oil tankers, and is currently consider7spinカジノg other types of vessels. NYK also plans to make use of this advancement as the company looks ahead to manned autonomous ships.

7spinカジノ its new medium-term management plan “Stay7spinカジノg Ahead 2022 with Digitalization and Green” released 7spinカジノ March, NYK announced a strategy to achieve susta7spinカジノable growth.
