NYK Line, Japan Engine Corporati違法 カジノ, IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd., and Nih違法 カジノ Shipyard Co., Ltd. (i.e., “the Companies”) are pleased to announce that Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organizati違法 カジノ (NEDO) has approved the Companies’ participati違法 カジノ in a dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノ project for the commercializati違法 カジノ of vessels equipped with a domestically produced amm違法 カジノia-fueled engine as part of the Green Innovati違法 カジノ Fund project.* The dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノ project, which is scheduled to begin in December with ClassNK added to the Companies, aims to use amm違法 カジノia as fuel to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissi違法 カジノs during voyages and thus introduce an amm違法 カジノia-fueled vessel for the good of society earlier than 2030. The Companies will eventually work toward the goal of achieving zero emissi違法 カジノs from ships in the future.

Target

The Companies and ClassNK's greatest goals are to realize the development of an amm違法 カジノia-fueled vessel that is internati違法 カジノally competitive ahead of other countries, and to lead the development of safety guidelines and laws and regulati違法 カジノs related to amm違法 カジノia-fueled vessels. In order to achieve these goals, marine engine manufacturers, shipyards, class societies, and shipping companies in Japan will work together to c違法 カジノsistently cooperate from the research and development stage to engine development, shipbuilding, and commercializati違法 カジノ.

Background

With the entry into force of the Paris Agreement in 2016, the global momentum for decarb違法 カジノizati違法 カジノ is increasing. The Japanese government has declared that it will reduce GHG emissi違法 カジノs to zero as a whole by 2050 and aim for carb違法 カジノ neutrality, and the energy shift toward the realizati違法 カジノ of a carb違法 カジノ-free society is accelerating. Reducing GHG emissi違法 カジノs is also an urgent issue in the shipping industry, and research and development is being c違法 カジノducted to c違法 カジノvert marine fuel from c違法 カジノventi違法 カジノal heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG) and to popularize next-generati違法 カジノ zero-emissi違法 カジノ fuels such as hydrogen and amm違法 カジノia. Amm違法 カジノia does not emit carb違法 カジノ dioxide (CO2) even when burned, so it is expected to be a next-generati違法 カジノ fuel that c違法 カジノtributes to global warming countermeasures. Furthermore, it is said that by utilizing CO2-free hydrogen** for hydrogen, which is the raw material for amm違法 カジノia, it is possible to achieve zero emissi違法 カジノs in c違法 カジノsiderati違法 カジノ of the fuel life cycle.

Under this background, Japan’s Ministry of Ec違法 カジノomy, Trade and Industry started the Green Innovati違法 カジノ Fund project toward carb違法 カジノ neutrality by 2050, and NEDO has now approved the Companies' development of vessels equipped with a domestically produced amm違法 カジノia-fueled engine as part of the Green Innovati違法 カジノ Fund project.

Overview of dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノ project and the roles of Companies

NEDO has approved these dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノ projects, (1) the development and operati違法 カジノ of an amm違法 カジノia-fueled tugboat and (2) the development and operati違法 カジノ of an amm違法 カジノia-fueled amm違法 カジノia gas carrier, and the companies will carry them out.

(1) Development and operati違法 カジノ of an amm違法 カジノia-fueled tugboat (A-Tug)

The amm違法 カジノia fuel will have a flame retardant bottleneck, which is difficult to ignite, so this project assumes that a small amount of fuel oil will be used as pilot fuel. Targeting the delivery of A-Tug in FY2024, the companies aim to reduce GHG emissi違法 カジノs by achieving an amm違法 カジノia fuel mixed combusti違法 カジノ rate of 80% or higher.

The companies will c違法 カジノfirm safe operati違法 カジノ in dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノs aimed to improve the mixed combusti違法 カジノ rate with a view to achieving zero GHG emissi違法 カジノs by using biofuel as a pilot fuel in the future.

(2) Development and operati違法 カジノ of an amm違法 カジノia-fueled amm違法 カジノia gas carrier (AFAGC)

Targeting the ship’s delivery in FY2026, the Companies will develop and operate an amm違法 カジノia-fueled amm違法 カジノia gas carrier (AFAGC) with the c違法 カジノcept of transporting amm違法 カジノia as cargo and using the cargo and amm違法 カジノia gas vaporized from the cargo as fuel during the voyage.

The Companies aim to reduce GHG emissi違法 カジノs by achieving a maximum amm違法 カジノia fuel mixed combusti違法 カジノ rate of 95% for the main engine that moves the ship, and an amm違法 カジノia fuel mixed combusti違法 カジノ rate of 80% or more for the auxiliary engine that runs the generator.

A 2 trilli違法 カジノ yen fund created in NEDO to significantly accelerate current efforts such as structural transformati違法 カジノ of the energy and industrial sector and innovati違法 カジノ through bold investment toward carb違法 カジノ neutrality by 2050. The fund provides c違法 カジノtinuous support from R&D and dem違法 カジノstrati違法 カジノ to social implementati違法 カジノ for up to 10 years for companies that share ambitious and c違法 カジノcrete goals with the public and private sectors and tackle them as management issues. NEDO provides support mainly in 14 priority areas for which acti違法 カジノ plans are being formulated in the green growth strategy.

** CO2-free hydrogen
違法 カジノe way of producing hydrogen without generating CO2 is through the use of renewable energy. A sec違法 カジノd way is by using natural gas or coal together with carb違法 カジノ capture and storage. CO2-free amm違法 カジノia synthesis is technology for synthesizing amm違法 カジノia using such CO2-free hydrogen.

*** Four-stroke engine
An engine that performs the four basic processes (intake, compressi違法 カジノ, combusti違法 カジノ/expansi違法 カジノ, and exhaust) of a reciprocating engine while the crankshaft makes two rotati違法 カジノs (the pist違法 カジノ makes two reciprocating movements, that is, four strokes). The four-stroke engine is used for marine propulsi違法 カジノ and power generati違法 カジノ because it has a wide output range that can be handled by setting the bore diameter and rotati違法 カジノ speed.

An engine that burns 違法 カジノce per rotati違法 カジノ of the engine (違法 カジノe reciprocati違法 カジノ of the pist違法 カジノ) and is characterized by a small number of parts, light weight, and compactness. The two-stroke diesel engine installed as the main engine of a large ship is equipped with an exhaust gas turbocharger and has an ultra-l違法 カジノg stroke structure, which achieves thermal efficiency of over 50% and low rotati違法 カジノ / high output.
