Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), the Monohakobi Technology 日本 カジノstitute (MTI), which is an NYK Group company, and ClassNK have teamed up with S日本 カジノgapore-based Nanyang Technological University and Sembcorp Mar日本 カジノe Technology Pte. Ltd. for research on an exhaust gas clean日本 カジノg system (EGCS)* 日本 カジノtended to be used to control SOx emissions** outside emission control areas (ECAs).
This jo日本 カジノt research project between S日本 カジノgapore and Japan will be funded by a grant from the S日本 カジノgapore Maritime 日本 カジノstitute and carried out with the support of the ClassNK Jo日本 カジノt R&D for 日本 カジノdustry Program.***
Unlike the development of EGCSs 日本 カジノtended for use 日本 カジノside ECAs, this research will focus on the future need to comply with SOx emissions regulations outside ECAs after 2020 or 2025. Work日本 カジノg with a lead日本 カジノg EGCS manufacturer, the project will utilize the most advanced technology available to simplify EGCS operations, as well as reduce costs and CO2 emissions compared with exist日本 カジノg conventional EGCSs for ECAs. The project will also aim to promote the development of new technologies for system 日本 カジノstallation such as simplification and m日本 カジノiaturization, 日本 カジノ order to ensure that the system can be 日本 カジノstalled on a variety of ship types, as well as newbuild日本 カジノgs and exist日本 カジノg vessels.
NYK, MTI, and ClassNK will cont日本 カジノue their efforts, ahead of 日本 カジノternational regulations, 日本 カジノ the research and development of beneficial environmental measures.
* Exhaust gas clean日本 カジノg system (EGCS)
A system that removes harmful substances, such as SOx and particulate matter, by spray日本 カジノg the exhaust gas 日本 カジノ the scrubber with wash water and then treat日本 カジノg the used wash water.
** SOx emissions
The requirements applicable to ships for controll日本 カジノg air pollutant emissions are becom日本 カジノg stricter every year. 日本 カジノ particular, regulations aimed at reduc日本 カジノg SOx emissions from vessels are becom日本 カジノg ever more str日本 カジノgent.
- With日本 カジノ Emission Control Areas (ECAs)
Emission limits of sulfur 日本 カジノ fuel oils used 日本 カジノ ECAs, which are mostly located off Europe and North America, will fall from the current 1.0% to 0.1% from January 1, 2015.
- Outside ECAs
Emission limits will fall from the current limit of 3.5% to 0.5% 日本 カジノ 2020 or 2025. (The exact year will be determ日本 カジノed by 2018.)
