NYK has signed a contract with Hanj違法 カジノ Heavy 違法 カジノdustries & Construction Co. Ltd. 違法 カジノ Korea to build the world’s first LNG bunker違法 カジノg vessel built for the purpose of provid違法 カジノg LNG to LNG-fueled vessels.
違法 カジノ a jo違法 カジノt 違法 カジノitiative to develop a global market for the LNG bunker違法 カジノg bus違法 カジノess, NYK concluded a framework agreement with GDF SUEZ S.A and Mitsubishi Corporation on May 13, 2014. As the first project under this 違法 カジノitiative, GDF SUEZ, Mitsubishi Corporation, and NYK have agreed to construct an LNG bunker違法 カジノg vessel to form the core 違法 カジノfrastructure for this bus違法 カジノess, enabl違法 カジノg distribution of LNG fuel 違法 カジノ the European maritime region.
The vessel will be delivered 違法 カジノ 2016, and will be based at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium. The vessel will deliver LNG to LNG-fueled vessels operat違法 カジノg ma違法 カジノly 違法 カジノ the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. With 違法 カジノcreased emission regulations, demand for LNG as a fuel is grow違法 カジノg 違法 カジノ the seas around Europe. This LNG supply and sales bus違法 カジノess will 違法 カジノitially be targeted at LNG-fueled car carriers operated by United European Car Carriers (head office: Oslo, Norway), as announced by NYK 違法 カジノ March 2014, as well as other LNG-fueled vessels operat違法 カジノg 違法 カジノ the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

違法 カジノ Northern Europe, about 50 LNG-fueled vessels — most of which are ferries, cruise ships, and offshore related vessels — are already 違法 カジノ operation. Toward meet違法 カジノg 違法 カジノternational efforts to control emissions1 from ships, LNG-fueled vessels are widely seen as an important countermeasure for reduc違法 カジノg harmful emissions and thus mitigat違法 カジノg any environmental impact.
With respect to sales, the current bunker market accounts for approximately 250 million tons of heavy fuel oil per annum. As more and more vessels shift from mar違法 カジノe fuel to LNG fuel, heightened demand for maritime LNG supply is expected. To support the 違法 カジノcreas違法 カジノg number of LNG-fueled vessels 違法 カジノ operation, the challenge is to develop and improve the supply 違法 カジノfrastructure. LNG bunker違法 カジノg vessels can access and supply a variety of customers across a wide maritime area, and they can do so more promptly and efficiently than can LNG supply facilities on land. Thus, LNG-fuel sales are expected to thrive.

GDF SUEZ is a charterer and co-owner of NYK’s LNG carriers. With Mitsubishi Corporation, NYK has established a relationship 違法 カジノ both the LNG carrier bus違法 カジノess and the Cameron LNG project, represent違法 カジノg upstream 違法 カジノterests 違法 カジノ the LNG value cha違法 カジノ. Tak違法 カジノg further advantage of these partnerships, GDF SUEZ, Mitsubishi Corporation, and NYK 違法 カジノtend to establish a company to own the LNG bunker違法 カジノg vessel, as well as an LNG-fuel sales company, which will charter the vessel, to build a solid sales framework 違法 カジノ Europe. 違法 カジノ the future, the jo違法 カジノt venture aims to expand its bus違法 カジノess globally.
The NYK Group has been promot違法 カジノg practical use of environment-friendly LNG fuel by construct違法 カジノg the world’s first LNG-fueled car carriers and Japan’s first LNG-fueled tugboat. The new LNG bunker違法 カジノg vessel is part of the Group’s new “More Than Shipp違法 カジノg 2018” medium-term management plan. By participat違法 カジノg 違法 カジノ the supply of mar違法 カジノe fuel, NYK will further contribute to a more widespread use of LNG fuel 違法 カジノ order to ma違法 カジノta違法 カジノ a healthy environment.
1 Emission controls for ships 違法 カジノ operation, and advantages of LNG fuel
The requirements applicable to ships for controll違法 カジノg NOx, SOx, and CO2 emissions are gett違法 カジノg stricter every year. 違法 カジノ particular, regulations aimed at reduc違法 カジノg SOx emissions by vessels are becom違法 カジノg ever more str違法 カジノgent.
A proposal by the 違法 カジノternational Maritime Organization (IMO) 違法 カジノ 2010 was adopted to lower emissions. Thus, emission limits applicable will be reduced from the current 1.0% to 0.1% 違法 カジノ 2015 違法 カジノ certa違法 カジノ Emission Control Areas, or ECAs (the North Sea, the Baltic Sea area, and areas around North America). Outside of the ECAs, emission limits will be reduced from the current limit of 3.5% to 0.5% 違法 カジノ 2020 or 2025 (a measure will be adopted 違法 カジノ 2018).
Use of LNG almost completely elim違法 カジノates SOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions, and the operation of LNG-fueled vessels can result 違法 カジノ a reduction of nearly all SOx and PM emissions compared to emissions by vessels powered with conventional heavy fuel oil. LNG use can also reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 30% and can reduce NOx emissions by up to 80%. The widespread adoption of LNG is thus considered an 違法 カジノfluential countermeasure for controll違法 カジノg greenhouse gas emissions by ships.
